In June of 2015, David Byrne – member of “Talking Heads” – produced a concert that featured 10 color guards with 10 well known musical acts including the Beastie Boys’ Ad Rock, Nelly Furtado and St. Vincent at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY. The concert was called “Contemporary Color”.
While only a few thousand people were able to actually see the concert in person, a documentary, called “Contemporary Color” as well, has been made about the event that has the music, marching and film world buzzing.
The documentary takes you behind the scenes in the weeks leading up to the event. It shows you the training by the color guard teams which include high schools and WGI (Winter Guard International) teams. It takes you back stage to see the emotion and excitement of the event and ultimately helps audiences learn more about the art of color guard.
Three high school guard teams are featured in the film. They are the Mechanicsburg High School from Pennsylvania, Shenendehowa High School from New York and Somerville High School from New Jersey.
Here is a trailer for the film:
The documentary premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival where it won Best Documentary Cinematography and Best Documentary Editing. It will hit select theaters in New York City, Seattle, Phoenix and San Diego this March. You can order a copy of it here.
